GREATER Dandenong’s mayor is urging residents to slip, slop and slap throughout the sizzling summer season.
For many Australians, summer means spending hours in the great outdoors.
But mayor Youhorn Chea said residents should play with caution when out in the sun to avoid exposure to harmful ultra-violet rays.
Cr Chea encouraged people to remember the slip, slop, slap message.
“UV rays can cause harmful damage to skin even during overcast days or in the early evening,” he said.
“Always remember to slip on a shirt, slop on 30+ water-resistant sunscreen and slap on a wide brim hat that covers the face, neck and ears.”
Dehydration is also a big risk over summer, particularly for children and the elderly.
This can cause faintness, headache and nausea in the short term and can potentially lead to hospitalisation or death if untreated.
“When venturing out for an extended time, protect against dehydration by making sure you bring enough water and that there is a shady place to rest,” Cr Chea said.
“If you have elderly neighbours or relatives who live alone, we also encourage you to check on them regularly to make sure they are drinking plenty of fluids and keeping cool.
“Also remember it is extremely dangerous to leave children and animals unattended in cars at any time, and especially over the summer months.”
Stay cool in summer heat, says mayor
