PARKMORE Shopping Centre in Keysborough slashed the amount of waste it sent to landfill in the past 12 months, as it became a certified EcoRecycle Waste Wise Business.
EcoRecycle Victoria chief executive Ian Coles said centre owners GPT, contractor Cleanaway and the Parkmore retailers should be congratulated on their efforts to adopt the Waste Wise Business Program. In partnership with Cleanaway, the centre installed facilities for recycling soft plastics, polystyrene and coat hanger recycling.
Opportunities have also been pursued to increase recycling of print cartridges, wax cartons and the use of “green office strategies” in the centre management offices.
The centre recycled 47 per cent of its waste in the 12 months to June, up from 35 per cent the previous year.
Mr Coles said the improvement will equate to the diversion of an estimated 359 tonnes of waste from landfill in 2005.
