Lib road pledge welcomed

THE City of Greater Dandenong has welcomed a Liberal Party pledge to allocate an extra $1.45 million to the municipality’s roads if it wins the next election.
Eumemmerring MP Gordon RichPhillips said the Liberals’ Better and Safer Roads for Victoria package would bring welcome relief for the council.
“The City of Greater Dandenong is struggling to keep its infrastructure in good condition under the Bracks Government.
“A big plus for local residents is that a Liberal Government will also hand control back to local councils and allow them to prioritise how they will use the road funding,” Mr RichPhillips said.
“Rather than allowing the State Government to decide which infrastructure requires work, local councils will be able to choose which road or bridge the funding is spent on.”
City of Greater Dandenong mayor Maria Sampey said the council was always looking for extra money for its roads. “Maintaining road infrastructure in the City of Greater Dandenong is one of council’s key priorities and we would welcome additional state and federal funding.
“Thousands of dollars are allocated each year in council’s budget and council will continue to identify additional funding sources.”
She said the council’s asset management services department was responsible for line marking, speed humps, roundabouts, bridges, kerbs and channels and general road repairs.
