Myth debunked

CONGRATULATIONS on running the story Shooters Aim High (Star, 20 April) and for highlighting the popularity of the Women Give It a Shot course.
Too often the stereotype that only men own and use firearms is allowed to go unchallenged, when the reality is that millions of women worldwide participate in shooting and hunting.
It was a refreshing change to see such a positive, factual article actively debunking the myths!

took control

OUTRAGEOUS, arrogant, dictatorial. What words best describe the antics of our city administration?
The Dandenong branch of the Country Women’s Association, an organisation dedicated to the welfare of women across Australia and to upholding community standards, is being treated with disdain.
Our elected councillors gagged on issues of concern to the community.
The Dandenong branch of the Red Cross was stopped from holding its monthly meetings in the town hall long before it was necessary, and told that it could only meet in a council office building if a councillor or council officer was present because “things might be taken”.
It is time for our elected council to take control of our city, to put an end to the illegal secret meetings and give us open and transparent local government.
It is what they were elected for and it is what we expect.

I WAS concerned about the growing rate of road accidents taking place because of careless pedestrians crossing roads while wearing earphones.
There have been many accidents in such circumstances and in one particular accident a 16 year girl was killed.
This girl was crossing the road while listening to her earphones when a tram came and knocked her to death. What a waste of life!
Why can’t the government do something about these young lives?
State Transport Minister Peter Batchelor says that young people are most at risk from traffic accidents while listening to music.
Then why not take some action and make a new law prohibiting the pedestrians to wear earphones, at our road networks and at our public transport systems until it’s safe to do so?
I’m disappointed with the amount of action taken by the government for such accidents that cost young lives. The government should take full responsibility and action to save the young generation to came, if they care.

MY friend recently drove to Dandenong railway station around 10.20pm to pick up a family member. As he drove in, he saw him standing there with his suitcase and pulled up next to him.
Signs are there pointing in the wrong direction and illegible, unless you are a regular day time user to the station you can’t see them.
Three female police officers were there. One officer approached my friend and ordered him to step out of the car, asked to see his licence, and said it was a bus stop and cars were not permitted to stand there. She took his details and said it was a warning.
My friend got back in the car and drove home. Some days later he got a letter from the police, a fine for $173 and three demerit points.
So much for police public relations.
