POLICE have warned residents not to buy goods when approached by hawkers on Greater Dandenong’s streets.
The warning comes as an Italian designer clothing scam is rife in the east and south-east of Melbourne.
Greater Dandenong Crime Investigation Unit Detective Senior Constable Stuart Freeman urged people to beware and report anyone who attempts to sell Armani or other designer brand clothing.
He said the scamsters were predominantly Italian men approaching people in public places and telling them they have a bootload of the clothing that needs to be cleared at a ‘reduced’ price.
Det Sen Const Freeman said the clothing bore the Armani logo, but not the brand name.
He urged anyone approached not to purchase the clothing, and to take notice of the number plate and immediately report the incident to police.
