WORK on the $17 million George Street Bridge connecting Dandenong’s Central Business District to the city’s southern sections is due to commence early next year.
The project is part of the State Government’s $92.8 million funding boost to kickstart the regeneration of central Dandenong.
The City of Greater Dandenong’s development services director Mal Baker said the bridge will link the business area to the city’s first major residential development, the $25 million Metro 3175 being built on the old saleyards site.
The development will provide about 1000 new homes.
“The $92.8 million Revitalising Central Dandenong project will unlock the city’s potential to become a thriving city centre in Melbourne’s growing southeast corridor,” he said.
Construction on the George Street Bridge is due to commence early next year and is expected to be completed by November 2007.
“The final design of the bridge is yet to be completed however our vision for the bridge is one that is aesthetically pleasing with a good urban design solution,” he said. “The bridge will include footpaths, bike paths and two through traffic lanes. The bridge will be both vehicle and pedestrian friendly.”
VicRoads will design and construct the bridge and the council will be responsible for its maintenance.
