A NEW $3.7 million housing complex in Dandenong will accommodate and offer support to families in the midst of a housing crisis.
Housing minister Candy Broad last week opened the Robinson Street complex comprising 15 units to be used for short term emergency housing that will combat homelessness.
She said the new complex would accommodate single people and families, and would be managed by Hanover Welfare Services.
“They are designed for short stays of between one day and six weeks while more permanent accommodation is found,” she said.
“Hanover, a not-for-profit agency, will provide 24-hour support for people using the new facility, seven days a week.”
Ms Broad said the complex was a first for Dandenong.
“It means that families in housing crisis won’t have to travel to crisis services in St Kilda in the middle of the night or be forced to sleep in the car. They will have 24 hour support in Dandenong.”
Agencies involved in the project are WAYSS, The Salvation Army Peninsula Youth and Family Services, Hanover Welfare Services, Windermere Child and Family Services, Springvale Community Aid and Advice Bureau and Good Shepherd Youth and Family Services.
