Butterfly lacks colour

By Kelly Yates
MADAME Butterfly flew into Dandenong’s Drum Theatre last Saturday for the official opening of Oz Opera’s national tour.
With colourful costumes and the accompanying orchestra, the cast took to the stage in front of a sell-out audience, with their powerful voices telling the story of the original version of Miss Saigon.
The show tells the tale of Cio-Cio-San, a 15-year-old Geisha girl who is married off to navy lieutenant Pinkerton.
They fall in love instantly but when it’s time for Pinkerton to return home, he disregards his beautiful Butterfly and she is left with no other choice but to take her own life.
The two hour Madame Butterfly show didn’t capture the audience from start to finish, with many guests saying they found it difficult to understand the story line.
The singing did, however, showcase the great acoustics the theatre has to offer, with the disappointing performance no reflection on the magic of the Drum Theatre.
