A GENEROUS car wrecker has ensured a disadvantaged football team can play out the remainder of its 2008 season.
The MIDDWAY Cobras, part of the RecLink League, has been a social and physical outlet for mentally ill, homeless and other disadvantaged Doveton and Dandenong residents for several years.
But historically, the club has always found it difficult to attract sponsors given that it is run by volunteers and plays on Wednesdays.
But this week the Cobras had two reasons to celebrate – a victory on Wednesday 9 July followed closely by a $1500 cheque being presented to the club by Rob Southouse of Merc Bits, a Mercedes wrecker, from Huntingdale.
Cobras secretary Don Cameron thanked Mr Southouse and said the $1500 would ensure the club could break even this season and continue playing. “It’s taken a long time to meet our costs this year but local newspapers have been great at promoting the team and we’ve slowly picked up the sponsors we needed along the way,” Mr Cameron said.
