Council races into action

COUNCILLORS and council staff swapped suits for lycra bike shorts for the Jayco Greater Dandenong Criterium bicycle road race late last year.
Greater Dandenong CEO Carl Wulff, corporate services director Ross Hepburn and Springvale North Ward councillor Alan Gordon were among those who participated in the council versus celebrity bike riders relay race last month, held as part of the Criterium race day.
The team competed against the likes of former Tour de France competitor Phil Anderson.
Despite the efforts of the council team, the celebrities prevailed on the day, winning the race.
Cr Gordon, who recently won the seat of Springvale North from former councillor Naim Melhem, was not as successful in the race as he was in the polls.
“No, I didn’t do too well,” he said.
But Cr Gordon said the day was entertaining, and all funds raised went to the Amy Gillett Foundation, formed in memory of the road cyclist who died in Germany last year when she was hit by a car while training with the Australian women’s cycling team.
Aside from the celebrity race, several professional bike rides took place, with prize money set at $5000.
