DANDENONG cricketer Sarah Edwards has been selected in the Australian cricket team for the 2007-08 season.
The Victorian Institute of Sport scholarship holder from Glen Waverley has been a regular in the Australian side since 2005, and was named in a squad of 18 earlier this week.
Edwards, 25, is captain of the Victoria Spirit women’s team and recently returned from international duty in March, when she helped the Australian team win the Quadrangular Series – dubbed the mini World Cup – against New Zealand, India and England.
Edwards was at the crease when Australia hit the winning runs in the grand final against New Zealand on 5 March.
While playing for Victoria Spirit in the Women’s National Cricket League over the summer, Edwards scored 332 runs – the third-highest tally in the competition – at an average of 33 per innings.
Edwards competed in the Essteele Clad Cup for Dandenong, where she racked up an impressive 360 runs at an average of 36.
The Australian team, the Southern Stars, will compete in the Rose Bowl Series against New Zealand in Darwin in July.
