DANDENONG businessman Roy Sanderson will embark on a bike ride through the infamous Thai-Burma Railway later this year if the community donates more than $5000 to Melbourne’s Shrine of Remembrance.
The railway was the site of intense labour for more than 12,000 prisoners of war captured by Japanese forces during World War II.
Mr Sanderson, an accountant, will ride through the railway on Remembrance Day, 11 November, this year.
But for those anticipating the pleasure of an accountant sweating profusely while short of breath on his bicycle journey through Thailand – it will come at a worthy price.
The Shrine of Remembrance has approved Mr Sanderson’s bike ride on the condition he raises $5000 in donations – all to be handed on to the shrine.
“I strongly believe in helping to ensure that the Anzac spirit and the history of the hundreds and thousands of fellow Australians who have all helped to defend our nation are remembered and stories passed on to younger generations,” Mr Sanderson said.
“After the first World War, the shrine was very much a place for grieving and reflection, a place for those who had suffered loss or returned from battle alive but changed forever.
“As we move on from the conflicts of the 20th century, the shrine has taken on an additional role, and that is educating future generations about the service and sacrifice of Australians in wartime.”
Mr Sanderson will travel with Casey residents Colin Van der Lught and Robert Pol Bodetto, who must also raise $5000 each.
Anyone wanting to sponsor Mr Sanderson on the trek through Thailand can call him on 9705 2500.
Donations over $2 are tax deductible with all proceeds contributing to help raise funds and awareness for the Shrine of Remembrance.
