THE Dandenong Softball Association’s under-16 boys side was so close yet so far at the recent Victorian Championships, going down 18-1 against Werribee in the grand final.
After thrashing Knox 23-3 and Frankston 22-3 in earlier rounds, Dandenong looked like taking it up to the competition favourites in the final rounds.
But Werribee continued its undefeated run, beating Dandenong 27-4 in game one and again in the grand final, 18-1.
Dandenong coach Lisa Tsivilis said Werribee looked unbeatable at times, but she was proud of her team’s effort.
“Their team included a number of state players. We had a young team,” she said.
“We only lost 10-6 to Werribee in the first round and I think that scared them a little bit.
But Lisa, whose son Sam played in the Dandenong side, said when the time came Werribee pulled out the big guns.
“(Dandenong) put in a terrific effort, but couldn’t get across the line,” she said.
