STUDENTS at Yarraman Park Primary School have sponsored a teacher to race in a kayak on the Murray River.
So far, students at the Noble Park school have donated more than $300 to urge grade one and two teacher Brendan Callery to be part of a four-person team in the Murray River Marathon this month, organised by the Australian Red Cross.
The marathon began in 1969 and is known as the world’s longest kayak race.
Mr Callery, who will paddle 404 kilometres in five days, said he was delighted with the enthusiastic support from his pupils.
He said he promised students he would paddle his best in the gruelling event, running from 27 December to 31 December.
The money raised by Mr Callery and all competitors will go directly to the Australian Red Cross to pay for its community programs and emergency services.
The race will consist of 800 competitors, 300 volunteers and a support team of 3000 people.
It starts in Yarrawonga and ends in Swan Hill.
