Students lead for health

LEADING a healthy life was this week’s focus at Maralinga Primary School with students harvesting and cooking vegetables and taking part in The Giant Walk.
Students who grew vegetables in special patches on school grounds were this week able to harvest their crops – then cook delicious dishes with them.
Maralinga Primary School principal Peter Gray said there were educational benefits to students growing and harvesting vegetables.
“This term our major focus is health and wellbeing, so fresh food and its benefits complement this really well,” he said.
“In addition, we’ve had the Olympic Games and a visit from the Life education van.
“Apart from the health focus though, it also links to maths through measurement of ingredients, comparing costs to produce bought in shops.”
The school also took part in The Giant Walk, a national attempt to have primary school students across Australia walk simultaneously on 1 September.
“This was our small contribution to the Australia wide target of over 231,635 walkers, which is the current Guinness World Record which was set in Canada in 2007,” Mr Gray said.
“Apart from the world record attempt, it fitted in with our Literacy and Numeracy Day theme.
“Again, lots of incidental learning can result from such activities, such as estimating how long will it take you to walk 1 kilometre.”
