NOBLE Park Swim Centre could commence a multi-million dollar face-lift this year if a bid for federal grant funding is approved.
The City of Greater Dandenong has applied for $7,270,000 for the centre under the Rudd Government’s stimulus funding package.
The council has also commenced talks with the Victoria Government with the intention of seeking partnership funding.
“The funding will assist council in rebuilding the Noble Park Swim Centre to ensure it meets the needs of the community now and well into the future,” city improvement manager Bruce Rendall said.
Proposed works for the swim centre include upgrading the centre’s facilities to swimmers, athletes, families and community members.
Swimmers would enjoy a replacement 50-metre outdoor pool and learn-to-swim pool, a new water play area with beach entry, leisure and water play activities, a preserved waterslide, and new family change rooms.
Also planned are a new café with outdoor seating, a multi-purpose community room, the incorporation of volleyball, basketball and soccer facilities, and shaded barbecue and picnic areas.
Federal Isaacs MP Mark Dreyfus said he was a major supporter of the Noble Park Swim Centre redevelopment and had raised the council’s bid with the Minister for Infrastructure.
“An improved swim centre would provide great benefits to the local community and I’m side by side with the City of Greater Dandenong in trying to obtain Federal Government funding to help make this proposal a reality,” he said.
If the council’s funding application is successful it is anticipated works would begin before 30 September.
As part of the federal stimulus package, councils have been encouraged to apply for grants towards ‘ready-to-go’ projects under a ‘Regional and Local Community Infrastructure Strategic Projects’ program.
