THE value and contribution of the manufacturing industry to the City of Greater Dandenong cannot be underestimated.
Manufacturing covers almost one-third of all jobs in the municipality, providing employment for more than 24,000.
The city’s manager of economic development, Ron Ghiggino, said every job in manufacturing supported the equivalent of one other full-time job.
“Over half of these additional jobs are what are known as the industrial effect and these are jobs in other manufacturing businesses, transport, business services and wholesaling,” he said.
“The other half are what is known as the consumption effect and are jobs in sectors such as retail, education, health and community services and the like.”
He said the actual multiplier was that for every 100 jobs in manufacturing there were 108 other jobs that either provided materials or services or benefited when money (mostly from wages) was spent in the economy.
