Greyhound racing chief honoured

HANDS on community member Jan Wilson was recognised on the Queen’s Birthday honours list on Monday for services to greyhound racing and the community.
Ms Wilson has been appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) and said receiving the recognition was a surprise.
“It was surprising to hear at first,” Ms Wilson said.
“But after working as a councillor and in parliament I feel I have a good link with the community.”
Ms Wilson, who has been the chairwoman of Greyhound Racing Victoria since 2000, will retire at the end of the year.
As chairwoman for almost a decade, Ms Wilson has overseen huge changes in the industry.
“We have been able to increase the financial position dramatically and are much more regulated now,” she said.
While she says she loves greyhounds she has been unable to own one as it would be a conflict of interest.
“When I retire I might look at getting one,” she said.
A Noble Park resident for over 40 years, Ms Wilson is thinking about moving closer to her son during her retirement.
“My son owns three newspapers near Ballarat and he wants me to go and help him,” she said.
“I’m definitely thinking about that, I am very interested about the media and good local coverage.”
