LOCAL students participated in a regional manufacturing forum held at Jayco’s Dandenong South headquarters.
The forum, in its first year, aimed to open students’ eyes to the range of jobs within the manufacturing industry and highlight the current skills shortages.
SELLEN hosted the event on 27 May, which was attended by over 300 students from eight local government areas.
Students were taken on a tour of the Jayco factory and given an insight into the operation of the manufacturing industry.
The students were also given valuable information including the particular skills employers look for when hiring employees.
Three young apprentices from Qantas, Jayco and Hilton Manufacturing also shared their workplace experiences with the students.
The apprentices spoke about their specific jobs, work hours and the benefits of working in the manufacturing industry.
Hallam Senior College careers teacher Benny Laird said the apprentices really spoke the students’ language and it was a great opportunity to see leading edge technology.
