THE City of Greater Dandenong, in conjunction with Victoria Police, has launched a new program aimed at reducing alcohol consumption in public places.
The programwill be initially rolled out in Noble Park.
It incorporates new signage, an education campaign and a police operation targeting alcohol consumption in public places.
Mayor Pinar Yesil said local laws were in place which prohibited the possession of an open container of alcohol in a public area.
She said signage included footpath stencils and stickers.
“We have spoken to a number of the liquor retailers in the area and they are happy to display posters,” she said.
Senior Sergeant Haydn Downes of Springvale Police Station said police would be targeting people drinking in public places around Noble Park.
“The public have the right to attend to their daily business without having to contend with the behaviour of people who have been consuming alcohol in public,” he said. “Police will also be inspecting licensed premises to ensure that they are fully complying with liquor licensing laws as part of the operation.”
