FUTURES are on the line this weekend in State League soccer with the final round set to reveal who will earn promotion and who will face relegation.
The Southern Stars are already assured of relegation from State League One after a dismal season that yielded just two wins from 21 games, but the Springvale White Eagles still have a slender chance to remain in the division. The White Eagles need to defeat Clifton Hill this Saturday and hope that Frankston loses to Bulleen, in which case the boys from Springvale would leapfrog Frankston, moving clear of the relegation zone.
The White Eagles will carry some momentum into the game, having knocked off Pascoe Vale 2-1 in the penultimate round last Saturday, keeping their season alive, while the Stars lost 3-1 to Clifton Hill.
In State League Two South East, South Springvale can still rescue its season with a win against Dandenong City this Saturday, but needs the Casey Comets to bottom side Kingston City to lose to avoid relegation.
Heatherton United, meanwhile, is safe in the middle of the table and will take on the Eastern Lions in its final clash of the year.
Springvale City will take on Southern Suburbs in its final State League Three South East clash of the year, coming off a 4-1 smashing of North Caulfield last weekend.
Springvale still has a tribunal hearing hanging over its head following its round 20 clash with Berwick City, where Springvale’s players ran on to the pitch after Berwick City received a penalty in the 84th minute.
Remarkably, Springvale was up 1-0 at the time but the referee was forced to call the game off, and a decision is expected before the final round gets under way. Springvale could finish as high as fourth or as low as sixth, depending on the outcome of the tribunal and the final round.
