WHEN Ros Stirling started teaching in 1974 news of US President Richard Nixon’s Watergate Scandal broke, the remains of the Mungo man was found and Cyclone Tracey devastated the city of Darwin.
She retires at the end of this term with many memories.
Ms Stirling’s career began at Moomba Park Primary School, but after one year she was transferred to what would eventually become her second home, Wallarano Primary School.
She looks back at her time at the school with many proud memories.
Over the years she has worked with many teachers and seen thousands of students pass through the gates of the school, even at a time when there were 1000 students enrolled at Wallarano and portable classrooms everywhere.
In her 35 years she has worked in the library, Grade 5 and the infant school – spending 18 years providing over 400 children with a great start to their education – before moving to her current role as Grade 2 teacher.
Principal David Buff described Ms Stirling as one of the most skilled practitioners at the school.
“I have no hesitation in putting any child in her class because I know they will learn and thrive in the caring environment she provides,” Mr Buff said.
“While I wish Ros all the best in the future, I don’t know how I will replace her.” Wallarano Primary School will celebrate the contribution Ms Stirling has made to the community at a special school assembly at 3pm on Friday 11 September in the school hall. All past and present students and their families are welcome to attend.
