THE Backyard Rugby Challenge held during the school holidays saw more than 60 local youths participate in the touch rugby program.
Held at Doveton’s Betula Reserve, the program aimed to give young people of all ages and skills something to do over the school holidays.
Dandenong’s Senior Constable Eddy MacDonald, a driving force behind the challenge, said he was very happy with the turn out over the two days.
“In the first week we had more than 60 people participate,” he said.
“The second week was quieter, with about 30 people, because of the Melbourne Storm open training session.”
Outside the school holidays local kids are invited to join in on games each Wednesday night from 4.30pm to 7pm until late October.
Sen Const MacDonald said the program aimed to bring the ‘three Cs’ back to local youths, namely community, culture and confidence.
“The main thing was for participants to have a good time while creating a positive and proactive community project that young people can get involved in,” he said.
