$100,000 cash found

By Lia Bichel
SPRINGVALE police have praised an Australia Post employee for handing in $100,000 she found in Clayton South last week.
The money was found by Georgia, who did not wish to give her last name, in a bucket behind the post office where she works last Wednesday about 4.30pm.
Springvale Constable Mike Hannie said he was shocked when he opened the ATM cash cartridge containing the money when Georgia handed it in.
“I recognised it as a cash cartridge when I saw it,” he said. “But I was shocked to find that much inside.”
Georgia said she was suspicious that the case contained cash but never thought twice about keeping the money.
“It was curiosity as to what it could be, and then I opened up the packaging and saw it had a few stickers and signs that could have something to do with money,” Georgia said.
“I was quite surprised. My first instinct was to ring the police and tell them I think I had found some money.”
Georgia handed the case into the Springvale Police Station about an hour after she found it.
She said she had expected a lot less money to be inside.
“We took a guess of $20,000 or $30,000 but then it was just going higher and higher,” she said. Police made inquiries into the incident before handing the cartridge and cash to the located owners, a security company.
Con Hannie said anyone who found money and did not turn it into police could be charged with theft by finding.
Anyone who may have information regarding the incident is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or visit www.crimestoppers.com.au.
