Coach baulks at playing choice

MARCUS Stergiopoulos has not ruled out a return to Premier League side Dandenong Thunder after he walked out on Division Two team Dandenong City only three weeks after taking over as coach.
The player-coach last week was told by president Tony Dorotic that the club felt Stergiopoulos could not fulfil the dual role and was asked to either chose a playing role or a coaching role but that he could not do both.
Stergiopoulos refused the orders by Dorotic to choose one or the other and as of last week Stergiopoulos once again became an uncontracted player only one month after quitting the Thunder and joining City.
Stergiopoulos said that it was “an unlucky coincidence” that the two games where he was player-coach were both losing matches.
“With all due respect, it is only Division Two and given where I have played and my background I could have done both,” Stergiopoulos said.
“I am very disappointed with the outcome but such is life.”
Stergiopoulos remains undecided on where he will end up playing next year while Dorotic says Dandenong will look at scouting a coach after the remaining two games of the season are played out.
In the mean time, Dandenong reserves coach Nick Colapa was all set to take over as step-in coach against Frankston, but his first game at the helm of City was postponed after the referee decided the pitch was too wet to play on.
Noel Fox and Mark Newsome were again the heroes for the Southern Stars as they beat Diamond Valley 3-2 to lock in a promotion to Division One next year.
The Stars could ill-afford to drop Saturday’s game at Partington Flats as a Diamond Valley win would have threatened the Stars’ run to promotion.
