Freedom fighters honoured

By Bridget Cook
MORE than 200 people gathered at the Pillars of Freedom in Dandenong to honour fallen servicemen last Thursday.
The pillars were the venue of choice for many local residents for the minutes’ silence held at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.
The Remembrance Day service was conducted by secretary of the Dandenong RSL sub-branch Judy Murdoch.
Lieutenant David Woodward addressed the crowd.
“Remembrance Day is aimed to commemorate the sacrifices made for us by men and women,” he said. “They made a sacrifice to make Australia what it is today. They sacrificed their health, strength and lives so we might live in a free country and others might do the same.”
Dandenong High School students Arjeta Demiri and Nikola Reljic read The Ode.
Representatives of the Armed Forces Cadets, members of the RSL, Greater Dandenong mayor Jim Memeti, councillors and local state and federal MPs took part in the service and the laying of wreaths and poppies.
