A NEW temporary artwork, which uses road signs as its source of inspiration, has been installed in Ewart Lane in Dandenong.
The work entitled Brick Wall is composed of street signs that label the seemingly obvious – a brick wall.
Local artist Zac St Clair said he was concerned with society’s preoccupation for signs and the need to provide directions, labels and warnings for almost everything in the public realm.
The project states the obvious by using large signs showing a brick wall in an environment dominated by brick walls.
The aim of the project is to make the space more visible to the people walking by.
Pedestrians can then notice the presence of brick walls throughout their journey through the city centre. This contemporary public art project will remain in place for 12 months.
City of Greater Dandenong Place Manager Jenny Pemberton-Webb said Brick Wall was part of the Transformed Program.
“We are inviting artists to contribute to the changing face of Dandenong by activating some of the more intriguing and less known spaces such as laneways and car parks,” she said.
“Noticing the hidden gems and punctuating the key pedestrian routes between the station and the market contributes to the vibrancy of central Dandenong.”
