Hobson’s long innings ends

PLAYERS, officials and spectators from all clubs observed a minute’s silence in memory of Vin Hobson before the Dandenong and District Cricket Association senior semi-finals on the weekend.
Hobson, 61, died at his home last Thursday. He is survived by his three children, David, Belynda and Emma.
Association president Michael Hawking commended Hobson’s commitment and service to cricket in the district.
Hobson’s death would leave a void in the local cricket community which, “cannot be filled”, he said.
“As a cricketer, Vin graced our playing fields for a long career that perhaps spanned three decades with his beloved Dandenong West,” Hawking said.
“At any level, Vin was a magnificent cricketer, his guile and smartness with the ball netted an extraordinary number of wickets. Premierships and performance – whether as a batsman, wicketkeeper or bowler – were just part of the process that contributed to making his club great.
“Vin’s impact in the umpiring fraternity was immense and many considered he was the very best.
“His trademarks were his firm decision making, his absolutely unquestionable integrity and the sound advice to assist a young spinner or words to calm a potentially volatile situation.
“He would have been selected to umpire the Turf 1 grand final this season as he has in the past.
“Now this year’s final series will be remembered perhaps not for the cricket, but the fact that we lost one of the DDCA’s most respected men.
“As an executive member, he was more than a positive force, he worked tirelessly and was available and responsive to all requests for assistance. He was thoughtful and considerate and no voice could have better represented the Umpires Association or the DDCA.
“The cricket community mourns the tragic passing of our mate Hobbo. You will be sadly missed, Vinnie.”
