A DANDENONG based rail technology company is at the centre of a $1 billion contract to build Gold Coast’s rapid transit system.
The GoldLinQ consortium, of which Dandenong’s Bombardier Transportation is a member, was awarded a $1 billion contract last week to design, build, operate and maintain the first stage of the Gold Coast Rapid Transit light rail public transport system.
Bombardier’s share of the contract will top $248 million.
Bombardier’s chief country representative for Australia Dan Osborne said the company was thrilled to be part of the contract.
“The Gold Coast Rapid Transit project is an important milestone in Bombardier’s long-term plan to grow its presence and broaden its local skill base in Australia,” Mr Osborne said.
The company will design and supply the system-wide electrical and mechanical elements including 14 Bombardier Flexibility 2 light rail vehicles (LRVs), signalling and control systems, communication systems, overhead line equipment and project management services.
At the depot, Bombardier will provide depot and plant equipment for LRV and rail system maintenance.
President of Bombardier Transportation’s systems division Eran Gartner said Bombardier’s experience would add to the project.
“Bombardier and our partners in the GoldLinQ consortium bring many years of expertise in the design, supply, operation, maintenance and financing of transportation systems all over the world,” Mr Gartner said.
“We will deliver to the Gold Coast a first class light rail system from which a truly integrated and sustainable transport network will flourish.”
Passenger services on the Gold Coast light rail system are expected to begin in 2014.
