A NEW litter prevention officer in Greater Dandenong is a step towards a cleaner city.
Greater Dandenong Council is one of nine municipalities to receive the officer, as announced by Minister for Environment and Climate Change Ryan Smith on Tuesday 16 August.
“Nine local councils across Victoria will receive funding to employ a dedicated litter prevention officer who will develop and implement highly targeted programs designed to minimise littler in the their area,” Mr Smith said.
“Litter prevention officers will lead education, capacity building and enforcement activities and will encourage communities to take practical measures to reduce litter.”
South Eastern Metropolitan Region MP Inga Peulich said she supported the program.
“Illegal dumping of rubbish and hard waste on our arterial roads has become a worrying concern for the local community, and I hope the litter prevention officer in Greater Dandenong will work with the local community to tackle this issue,” she said.
The new council employees will issues fines and direct enforcement, patrol rubbish hot spots and educate businesses and the wider community on waste disposal. The positions will be funded using $1 million from landfill levy funds.
