WALLARANO students put their minds to the test and came out on top on Saturday.
Seven students from Grade 5 and 6 competed against 26 other schools in the regional heat of the Tournament of Minds competition at La Trobe University in Bundoora and took out first place.
Wallarano Primary School principal David Duff said it was the first time the school had entered a team into the problem-solving competition and they were proud of their success.
“We are all extremely proud of their achievements,” Mr Duff said.
“They developed their ability to work creatively as a team and to problem solve issues that arose.”
The students completed two problem-solving challenges during the day, including a spontaneous challenge and a long-term challenge, which the students had been working on for six weeks.
The group created a movie trailer for the 1996 film ‘Matilda’ using school equipment and justified why their trailer should win.
“Their presentation of the trailer was outstanding, as it was all written in rhyming verse and used costumes and props made by the children,” Mr Duff said.
The students are now busy preparing for the Victorian final, which will be held on Sunday 18 September at La Trobe University in Bundoora.
