The speed and red-light cameras have been installed at two intersections, both prone to serious injury collisions, and will be activated as part of 32 additional cameras across Victoria.
The cameras at the intersections of Heatherton and Stud roads in Dandenong and Princes Highway and Elonera Road in Noble Park North will be switched on in the next few weeks.
Greater Dandenong Highway Patrol Acting Sergeant Peter Henderson said the Dandenong intersection had the second-highest number of serious injury collisions in Greater Dandenong.
“These new speed cameras should be a welcome method to reduce the number of collisions at those intersections,” he said.
“If you obey the road rules, the cameras won’t be an issue for you.
“We’ll make it safer for you by catching those offending drivers before they’re involved in collisions.”
The Noble Park intersection has the fifth highest number of collisions and is also prone to drag racing problems, Acting Sgt Henderson said.
“The camera at the intersection in Noble Park will be an effective tool in combating drag racing problems on the Princes Highway,” he said.
“Hopefully residents will see the benefit of that.’
Deputy Premier and Minister for Police Peter Ryan said the 32 cameras would be activated on a weekly basis over the coming months.
“The activation of these cameras are timely as October was the worst month on our roads last year with 36 people fatalities, representing an eighth of the 2010 road toll in just one month,” he said.
“These cameras are located at intersections across the state to deter motorists from flouting the road rules and endangering their own lives and the lives of others.”
Cameras have also been installed at the corner of Heatherton and Monash Freeway in Doveton and Princes Highway and South Gippsland Freeway in Eumemmerring.
