Club mourns stalwart Wood

By Jarrod Potter
THE Dandenong West Cricket Club is in mourning this week after the death of club stalwart Reg Wood last week.
Wood, 64, was found in his house last Thursday by a concerned neighbour.
It appears that Wood died sometime during the week of his discovery, but the cause of death is unknown at this stage.
He was a life-member and popular volunteer at the Bulls and was well known to a large number of DDCA people who attended Dandenong West games and after-match functions and in recent years he also filled a position on the DDCA tribunal. Dandenong West president Nathan Goodes said Wood will be impossible to replace and that his enthusiasm for the club knew no bounds.
“He’s been the heartbeat of this cricket club for as long as I’ve been around,” Goodes said.
“He was down there every Saturday morning at 8 o’clock taking covers off, putting food on, and was there well past stumps most Saturday nights.”
“He played for the club in his younger days as an off-spin bowler.
“He would’ve played in a premiership and also played in turf cricket.”
Dandenong West wore black armbands in their match against Mordialloc, which was called off due to a wet square.
“We’re awaiting the details of his funeral,” Goodes said. “He didn’t have very many family members, so it’s been a bit of a nightmare so far to organise.
“The club is not going to be the same without him.
“If I had a dollar for every time I thanked him for doing something I’d be a millionaire by now.
“He’s one of those blokes you can’t replace.”
