YOLANDA Matlakowsai is etching herself a place within Dandenong’s art scene.
Ms Matlakowsai, 55, is currently showing some of her sketches at the Walker Street Gallery, and is particularly proud of the pieces in her ‘Good Night and Good Will’ exhibition.
“I have shown over the years but I am bipolar so I never get going long enough to get anywhere,” the Dandenong artist said.
“You don’t organise yourself like most artists try to.
“This exhibition has been nice because I was able to put together pieces that I felt should go together rather than putting things together because the gallery wants something.”
Ms Matlakowsai said being an artist with bipolar was challenging but she was proud of the exhibition.
“People with bipolar have a strong imagination so it helps in some ways but it is not useful having a great imagination if you are so down… you’re always walking a line,” she said.
“I was very lucky to be invited to show at the Walker Street Gallery.”
Ms Matlakowsai likes to describe her work as powerful and compelling with some dark and some beautiful pieces.
The pieces from this exhibition are directed against the pursuit of nuclear power.
“I am very much against that because I read a book about Hiroshima and the children,” she said.
“I think it has influenced all of my life ever since I read that book.”
‘Good Night and Good Will’ by Yolanda Matlakowski will be on show at the Walker Street Gallery until 28 November.
