DANDENONG’S basketball community is getting behind a good mate Warren Bird and holding a fundraiser exhibition wheelchair basketball match on Saturday.
Bird, who played for the Dandenong Victoria Rangers wheelchair basketball team in the 1990s, has fallen upon hard times with illness and the Dandenong basketball community has decided to chip in to help out.
Brook Quinn, Bird’s former Dandenong team-mate and lifelong friend, said the event was there to help Bird and his family, wife Lee and daughter Nico, and have a get together with a lot of team-mates from years ago.
“It will be good getting Warren to see a few old friends that he hasn’t seen in a while,” Quinn said.
“It’s also a chance to get down and watch a really good game of basketball with two Dandenong teams playing each other and getting ready for the new season.”
“He’s had some serious health issues over the last couple of years. He’s struggling with it and needs all the support he can get.”
“It’s a great thing for Dandenong and a great way to support a good cause.”
Entry to the exhibition match also gets entry to the WNBL match between the Dandenong Rangers and Adelaide Lightning.
The wheelchair basketball match starts at 5pm at the Dandenong Basketball Stadium.
