Rangers troubled by Supercats

By JARROD POTTER

SEABL – round 2

THERE was not much joy in Dandenong’s SEABL double-header at Geelong Basketball Stadium on Saturday night, with the Rangers downed twice by the Supercats.
The women’s team narrowly lost 56-63 to the Supercats as the Rangers fell away after quarter time. A 23-12 lead was squandered with Alex Duck (19 points) and former WNBL Dandenong Ranger Sara Blicavs (14 points) charging past Dandenong.
Jacinta Kennedy – who readers of the Journal might remember as Jacinta Hamilton during her WNBL playing days before marrying Socceroo Josh Kennedy – snagged seven points and 11 rebounds to maintain a double-double average to her SEABL career. Also stepping up for Dandenong were Faith Probst (9 points, 7 rebounds) and Tenaya Phillips (9 points, 7 rebounds), who attacked the key with aplomb.
The pain only got worse for Rangers’ fans that travelled down the coast with the defending champion Rangers thumped by the Supercats’ men 76-103.
After once again holding a quarter time lead, 29-26 Dandenong was completely outplayed by the Supercats down the stretch as Eric Gaff (19 points, 16 rebounds) lit up the court for Geelong. Mike Mercer (24 points, 7 assists, 6 rebounds) also impressed in the victory.
On the Dandenong side of the ledger, Brent Hobba (26 points) and Tony Lewis (19 points, 14 rebounds) posted monster numbers.
Dandenong women have a bye this weekend, while Dandenong men face a 2013 SEABL championship rematch against Mount Gambier on Friday night from 8pm.
