RACISM. Get Up. Speak Out.
This is the message of the new City of Greater Dandenong arts project exploring and celebrating positive responses to racism.
A call for participants came just days after a commuter unleashed a barrage of racial abuse against another woman, who was from the Philippines and travelling to Dandenong by train on 16 April.
A video of the incident posted online sparked condemnation of the tirade.
The council is seeking people who act positively when confronted with racism – offering a seat on the bus to someone being harassed, speaking out against racial slurs on the sports field or openly spreading the word that racism is not acceptable.
Community services director Mark Doubelday said Greater Dandenong was home to people from more than 156 nationalities.
“This melting pot of cultures brings a range of delicious cuisines, vibrant cultures and rich heritage to our community,” he said.
“At times it also raises issues around acceptance of our differences and, although unacceptable, at times racism is still evident in our community.”
Racism. Get Up. Speak Out. will use film and community workshops to create awareness.
