“PLEASE see Anzac Day as a salute to the past, yes, but a signal to the future more so.”
This was the plea from Dandenong RSL president John Wells at the sub-branch’s Anzac Day service on 25 April.
Guest speaker Andy Nguyen was a lieutenant in the South Vietnam army.
He came to Australia by boat after the Vietnam War.
He attended his first Anzac Day march in 1981, watching veterans from World War I and II and the Korean War.
“And especially Vietnam War veterans, who helped us defend our country. We regarded them as heroes,” he said.
He now marches alongside them.
