FOR lucky few over the weekend, Athletics Victoria hosted the second leg of the state road relay championships at Sandown Racecourse – with runners from seven to 70 taking to the bitumen around the 3.1km picturesque course.
Racers from clubs all across Victoria took to the circuit with Box Hill – Matthew Coloe, William Potter, Andrew White, Stephen Dinneen, Anthony Aloisio and Stephen Kelly – emerging victorious in the senior men’s race ahead of Knox Athletics and Geelong Region.
In the senior women’s event, Glenhuntly – Sarah Lund, Tarli Bird, Meredith Cook, Julia Edwards – took the chequered flag ahead of Box Hill, Melbourne University and APS United.
The juniors also had their turn tearing around the main straight, with runners as small as seven years old tackling the course – with the smaller kids racing the one-kilometre main straight, up to the full length of the track for the older kids.
The third leg of the series is around Lake Wendouree, Ballarat, on 25 May.
