A 12-YEAR-OLD girl returns home to Vietnam and her big Australian ‘milk hips’ wow the crowd.
The people of Vietnam have never seen someone so huge and exotic. They stare. They gossip. She’s an outcast.
Springvale writer, director and performer Diana Nguyen is bringing this comic tale to life at the Melbourne Fringe Festival.
Asian-flavoured cabaret Viet Kieu explores an Australian Vietnamese woman’s struggle between two cultures. The term Viet Kieu is an ‘overseas Vietnamese’.
“She has two identities, two homes and Viet Kieu sings and performs the internal dialogue and stories she experiences living in Australia and travelling to Vietnam,” Ms Nguyen said.
Viet Kieu is on at The Butterfly Club, 5 Carson Place, Melbourne, at 9.30pm on 29 September and 2 and 6 October.
Tickets to the hour-long show are $23 for adults, $20 concession and $18 for groups and available from melbournefringe.com.au or 9660 9666.
