Choose your bins

By CASEY NEILL

NEW bins will roll out across Greater Dandenong from July, and residents have the power to pick them.
The Great Bin Swap is designed to get people thinking about their household waste and increase recycling, and to replace bins past their use-by date.
Residents now have six bin options to choose from, featuring various recycling, garage and garden size combinations.
Engineering services director Bruce Rendall said people could choose the size that best suited their needs and the smaller the bin, the lower the cost.
However, an increase in the State Government’s landfill levy means a slight overall increase to the council’s garbage charge.
Mr Rendall said the ageing bins had burdened the council with repair costs, and it was more efficient to replace them all than on a bin by bin basis.
The council will collect the old bins to be recycled into new products and won’t be emptying them after the nominated collection date.
The new bins will also bring the municipality into line with the standard colours of yellow for recycling, red for garbage and green for garden waste, to aid wider recycling education campaigns.
Residents have until 21 April to choose their new waste, recycling and garden bins. Visit www.greaterdandenong.com/greatbinswap for more information.
