Designed to a T

By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS

DRAWING on a Grimms Brothers fairytale, Jennifer Thy has conceived an award-winning T-shirt design with an uplifting message.
Ms Thy, an Endeavour Hills communication design student, placed among the top 10 of 1500 entrants from around the world for the ‘YoorallaTEE’ competition.
The design brief was to “redefine disability”.
Ms Thy said her design of an old-world mechanical hand – which wouldn’t look out of place in Leonardo Di Vinci’s copybook – was based on the fairytale “The Girl Without Hands”.
In the story, the heroine overcomes her disability with the help of artificial limbs.
“It is a story of a girl who, with her persistence, courage and strength, beats her grief and fear and
finally triumphs.”
Ms Thy – who keeps a keen eye on fashion trends – was excited by the thought of potentially seeing her designs walking down the street.
As a soon-to-be graduate, she said the timely win was “really good for my resume”.
“It promotes me really well as a designer.”
Hers and nine other winning designs from Australian, US and Indonesian entrants will be on sale in Dangerfield stores nationally and online.
Proceeds from T-shirt sales go to Yooralla and the Bob Maguire Foudation.
