AUSTRALIANA is the theme for this year’s Australia Day celebrations in Dandenong Park.
Family-friendly entertainment will fill the Pultney Street space from 3pm to 9.30pm on Monday 26 January.
City of Greater Dandenong expects more than 9000 people to check out live music, roving performances, fireworks, an AirForce Roulettes aerobatic display, food and market stalls, rides, workshops and games.
Mayor Sean O’Reilly said Australia Day was particularly symbolic for many of the city’s residents.
“With one of the most culturally diverse communities in Australia, Greater Dandenong embraces the true spirit of Australia,” he said.
“Promoting unity, tolerance and acceptance, Australia Day is a chance for our residents to come together and celebrate what being Australian means to them.”
Festival highlights will include a native Australian animal display, a jumping castle and giant slide, fire pits for toasting marshmallows, a Dame Edna Everage impersonator and a special area for children aged under five years.
The Greater Dandenong Brass Band, The Weekend People, Mercury White, Keshie and Mystic Trio will perform, and the SKAF hip hop crew and the Bollydazzlers will dance up a storm.
Festival-goers will receive two free ride tokens and free valet parking if they ride their bicycle to the event.
Outstanding local citizens and community groups will be recognised for their community spirit and commitment to making a difference to the city at the annual Greater Dandenong Australia Day Awards at the Drum Theatre at 2pm.
Cr O’Reilly said the award winners each displayed the important qualities of generosity, hard work, and perseverance through their tireless work in a number of community groups and organisations.
A citizenship ceremony will immediately follow the awards ceremony.
