Danger dog goes into foster care

A HOMELESS woman’s pooch pal has been saved from a death sentence.
Kim Reeves, 26, told the Journal in December that the City of Greater Dandenong had unfairly classified her eight-year-old rottweiler Laura as a dangerous dog.
She rejected allegations that the dog killed a neighbour’s chickens and said she was her closest companion through years of drifting between rental accommodation, boarding houses and sleeping rough.
The council seized Laura in September arguing that the homeless Ms Reeves was unable and unwilling to securely house the dog, which it considered a risk to public safety.
Barristers Animal Welfare Panel intervened on 5 December and gave Ms Reeves 14 days to convince the council that she could adequately house the dog and comply with dangerous dog regulations.
The national panel last week reported that it had worked with solicitor Daniel Beecher to engage community-based foster care network Unforgettable Creatures to take care of Laura until Ms Reeves was able to provide adequate housing.
The council agreed to the arrangement and on 2 January released Laura to a foster carer.
