Police slam attack bystanders

By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS

ABOUT 100 bystanders failed to assist a man who was seriously assaulted in a hotel car park near Springvale Junction early on Saturday morning (25 July).
Police said the 42-year-old man was attacked by five men after he accidentally bumped into one of the group in the car park at the corner of the Princes Highway and Springvale Road, Mulgrave, just after midnight.
One of the attackers used a weapon collected from a white Ford AU utility.
Detective Senior Constable Chris Duke of Monash CIU said it was a “sad state of affairs” that a large group of witnesses “stood back and watched this assault take place without trying to intervene”.
None of the bystanders helped the victim even after his attackers fled, police said.
However a person driving past the scene assisted the man and called an ambulance.
Police said the victim suffered a large puncture wound to the back of his head, which required 13 stitches.
He was left with lacerations to his arm pit, a wound to his elbow and bruising on his face, arms and body.
His attackers were described as being of Middle Eastern appearance.
Any information to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or crimestoppersvic.com.au.
