NEW signs at the Springvale Station will capture the community’s role in developing the area.
The signs recognise the Three Stations and Springvale Project, launched by the then City of Springvale in 1989.
It aimed to integrate community, environment and arts through an open space network and involved establishing a native vegetation corridor and art projects within the railway reserves at Springvale, Sandown Park and Noble Park.
Volunteers planted hundreds of trees along the four-kilometre rail line stretch over four years.
Mayor Heang Tak said the signs were part of a wider place-making project to help recognise Greater Dandenong’s history.
He said Springvale Station was just a clearing in the scrub when it opened in 1880.
“Today more than 1.6 million people use the Springvale Station each year, and when people stop to read this sign then we will be passing on those historical stories to future generations,” Cr Tak said.
“It is important to share and celebrate our rich heritage and local stories, as this helps new residents or people settling in the City Greater Dandenong to understand our city and its evolution.”
