Second shave overshadows first

By CASEY NEILL

A FEW cuts and colours have raised more than $7500 for the Leukaemia Foundation.
Dandenong man Colin Gibbons held his second annual World’s Greatest Shave event at Dandenong Workers Social Club on Sunday 13 March.
“We had a hugely successful day,” he said.
“I was blown away.
“We did not expect it to go as well as that.
“We thought the numbers would be down a little bit because it’s a long weekend.”
But the numbers were up more than $4500 from the inaugural event last year, with a $7594.60 grand total.
“We’re going to make it huge next year,” Mr Gibbons said.
About 20 people shaved their heads at the event including Barbara Collins, who farewelled the hair from half of her head for $100 and drummed up another $100 pledge to take off the remaining locks.
“I lost count of the people getting their hair coloured,” Mr Gibbons said.
“My daughter ran out of a couple of colours at one stage.”
The 18-year-old, Yao, shaved her head last year and braved the feat again.
Dandenong barber Ian Bray returned to donate his services.
Sherwin Gonsalvez shed his locks at last year’s event and passed away a few months ago.
His family attended this year’s shave and “donated a good amount in his name”.
More than 31 Australians are diagnosed with leukaemia, lymphoma or myeloma every day, and an Australian will lose their life to blood cancer every two hours.
The Leukaemia Foundation funds research and free support for blood cancer sufferers and their families.
