Gem of an opportunity for apprentices

Commercial cylinder head work in progress at HM GEM Engines.

Up to 10 apprenticeships are up for grabs with Dandenong award-winner HM Gem Engines.
The company is Australia’s largest re-manufacturer of automotive, heavy diesel and industrial engines and cylinder heads.
HM Gem services automotive, heavy diesel, transport, industrial and marine clients throughout Australia.
Applications are open for up to 10 apprenticeships next year.
They’ll receive engineering training on a broad range of engines and components.
HM Gem general manager Dean Taylor said he’d prefer applicants to have a Year 12 certificate and “a passion for engineering perfection”.
Mr Taylor has been with the company for 20 years after starting as an apprentice automotive machinist and fitter and turner.
“Like most young guys I was interested in engines and cars,” he said.
HM Gem started in a small garage in 1969 and has taken on about 460 apprentices over the years.
The company has received the Prime Minister’s Employer of the Year award four times and was acknowledged as the Best Engine Reconditioner in this year’s VACC Awards to Industry.
Founder Bruce Parker was inducted into the Greater Dandenong Hall of Fame at the Premier Regional Business Awards in April.
HM GEM Engines also made the top four in the guest-voted Premier Regional Business Award.
