Oh brother, it’s a gallery

Greater Dandenong residents can shape the Dandenong Masonic Hall’s transformation into an art gallery.
The council’s vision is to extend and refurbish the 1923 building in Mason Street.
Walker Street Gallery would be relocated to the site and the Masonic Hall would become the new home to Greater Dandenong’s public art gallery.
Greater Dandenong Mayor Youhorn Chea said the proposed redevelopment was based on celebrating art and culture in Dandenong.
“The project aims to create an art gallery that is an exceptional cultural facility,” he said.
“The design offers the opportunity to host high-calibre touring exhibitions, as well as inclusive community programs where local artists can showcase their work.
“The vision is to create a new public icon within central Dandenong that fosters participation and inclusivity among Dandenong’s diverse community.”
In September 1922, the Lodge of Sincerity was struggling for space due to a large increase in memberships and held a meeting to discuss the possibility of building.
It entered a contract with Brother G. Snell to have plans and specifications drawn up for the cost of 2800 pounds.
Tenders were called and a building contract was signed with Brother N.A. Taylor for 2530 pounds.
The lodge held its first meeting in the new building on 22 December 1923.
It amalgamated with several local lodges in 1991 and moved out.
The Recycle Workshop used the building in 1992 and by September 1996, Mick and Rosa Valenti had acquired the building.
They leased it to the Spanish Christian Church for three years.
Greater Dandenong Council announced plans to redevelop the site last year.
