Grant offers shelter from the sun

Yarraman Oaks students will be protected from the summer sun thanks to a $27,500 grant.
The Noble Park school received cash through the State Government’s School Shade Grants Program to build a new shade area.
“Skin cancer is a major health issue for Australians, yet it’s mostly preventable,” Health Minister Jill Hennessy said.
“Schools play a critical role in helping kids learn how to be sun smart from an early age.”
About 40,000 new skin cancer cases are diagnosed each year in Victoria.
Shade can help reduce overall exposure to UV radiation by up to 75 per cent when used alongside other sun protection like sunscreen, hats, sunglasses and protective clothing.
The State Government aims to save 10,000 lives from cancer in the next 10 years through a $15 million program that includes the Shade Grants.
